Church History

The history of the Israelite Baptist Church began in October 1937, under its founder, Rev. Lamar V. Brown. With a few dedicated Christians, the first church stood in a small building at Dryades and St. Andrew Streets. Through years of work the congregation acquired property at Melpomene and South Saratoga, rebuilt in 1954, and kept growing. Rev. Brown departed this life on April 1, 1966.

In October 1966, Rev. Mason Thompson was installed as pastor. New property was purchased at 1500 to 1523 South Saratoga, and the note was liquidated in 1968. Rev. Thompson served faithfully until ill health caused his incapacity.

Rev. Israel Jones was then installed and, with the congregation, kept alive the dream of a new Israelite Baptist Church.

In December 1969, Rev. Martin Behrman Fortner was elected, and in January 1970 he was installed. Under his leadership more property was purchased along South Saratoga and Martin Luther King Boulevard, and many organizations were formed, among them the Martin B. Fortner Chorale and Tuesday Night Bible Study. The congregation marched into its new edifice on August 24, 1986. Pastor Fortner served 29 years until the Lord called him home on July 16, 1999.

Rev. Emanuel Smith, Jr. was installed on November 5, 1999. Under his administration the church began an Outreach Ministry of great benefit to the community, with monthly feeding of the homeless, after-school tutoring, shelter vouchers, employment help, counseling, summer camp, and the annual Mind, Body and Soul Health Fair. On February 29, 2004 the church tower became a beacon light for all to see.

In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans, but the waters did not enter the sanctuary. On September 25, 2005 the church held its first service after the storm and opened its doors to other congregations while they rebuilt. In 2006 the lot across the street was paved for parking, and on March 11, 2007 the renovated sanctuary was rededicated. We remain committed to bring this community back as we spread the gospel of Christ.
